Hey KC — Editorial Intern Mac here. I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite things about Kansas City is our love for pets. Whether you’re looking for a new addition to your family or just want to help out some of our furry friends, here's a handy guide to some of the local shelters.

KC Pet Project | Multiple locations With several locations around Kansas City, KC Pet Project serves as a temporary home for dogs, cats, rabbits, and rodents. Ways to get involved include fundraising, fostering, and volunteering. They even have a shelter wish list locals can purchase from to help with specific needs.
Wayside Waifs | 3901 Martha Truman Rd., Kansas City, MO
This no-kill shelter has its very own “Bark Park,” walking trail, and onsite clinic, so Wayside volunteers have a plethora of ways to help the animals. Adoptable animals include dogs, cats, and small animals. Other ways to help include donating and field trips.
Great Plains SPCA | 5424 Antioch Dr., Merriam, KS
With dogs, cats, and small mammals onsite, this shelter can use all paws on deck. An onsite retail store uses funds to support the animals, and you can also sponsor a kennel, donate, volunteer, or buy from a wishlist. The shelter also has a pet food drive and behavioral training.
The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City | 5445 Parallel Pkwy., Kansas City, KS
There are plenty of dogs and cats to meet here, but this organization also specializes in educating owners, running a pet food pantry, and promoting affordable pet care. They are also looking for foster homes, donations + volunteers.
Always and Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary | 23595 W. 223 St., Spring Hill, KS
This beautiful barn sanctuary is home to dogs and cats. The barn aims to save unwanted pets so they may live in comfort and peace without being kept in kennels. All animals on-site are adoptable, but they are always looking for new volunteers and donations as well.

Festival
- Spotlight Charlie Parker is celebrating the 102nd birthday of the KC jazz icon, and organizers just released the event schedule. From Mon., Aug. 22-Sat., Aug. 27, enjoy performances including resident artists Morgan Faw and Houston Smith + the debut of a new Charlie Parker website by local historians. 🎷
Coming Soon
- Get ready for cargo pants. Clothing and equipment store 5.11 Tactical is opening a location in Overland Park — at 12010 Metcalf Ave. The company’s name reflects the highest level of difficulty in rock climbing. The late-fall opening will follow its Independence location as the second in the metro. (Blue Valley Post)
Closing
- Plowboys Barbecue Restaurants (Blue Springs and Power & Light) will close on Sun., Aug. 14. The owners are planning to retire from restaurant life, shifting their focus to their retail rubs + sauces. The restaurants were known for the loaded nachos and USA Today’s “Best Burnt End Sandwich” in 2016. 🍖
Shop
- Back to school season is upon us. The Plaza released a list of discounts in August, including 15% off at Paper Source for Teachers + Charlie Hustle’s first line of children’s fleece. That paired with Missouri’s tax-free weekend could make for some sweet savings. (The Beacon)
Drink
- We know the No. 1 question on your mind: Where’s the biggest kombucha taproom in the country? The answer is in our very own Olathe, KS. Tea-Biotics recently debuted a new headquarters — at 677 N. Lindenwood Dr. — with 56 different flavors. We have a good gut feeling about this. 🥤 (FOX4)

From your table, looking back to the farm — chef Andrew Longres remembers the best meals he ever had was growing up on his family farm, Rolling Acres in Liberty, MO.
"My mother cooking for me, my wife cooking for me: those are the things that I really want to embody and what Acre is all about," he said at his restaurant opening.

Andrew has worked in several famous restaurants, like The French Laundry, Bluestem, and The American Restaurant. Now, he has his own — at 6325 Lewis St., Parkville, MO.
Experience his wood-fired hearth fare (we loved the smoked tomato soup + pickled chicken) Tuesday-Saturday, 5-10 p.m., and see the full menu here.
