Hello Thursday.
March 28 2024
Rise and shine, campers. It’s Groundhog Day. ⏰
This more than 100-year-old tradition began on Feb. 2, 1887 in Punxsutawney, PA when a newspaper editor declared the town’s groundhog Phil the country’s “only true weather-forecasting groundhog.”
While some of you may be waiting to hear if we’ll have six more weeks of winter, others might be wondering what it would be like to be stuck in a time loop reliving the same day over again. We have Bill Murray’s 1993 movie to thank for that.
This concept got us thinking — if we could live any day in Kansas City over again, what would it be?

Editor Travis is an old soul, a history nerd, and a saxophone player. He would go back in time and relive the day in 1936 that Charlie Parker messed up his solo at the Reno Club. The 16-year-old played some wrong notes + got a cymbal thrown at him. Many consider that incident to be the moment that changed his career — and ultimately jazz as we know it.
To reminisce on days we’d play on repeat, we asked you what local day you wouldn’t mind having again. Here’s what you said:

“I’d like to relive the Royals wild card game. It was an emotional rollercoaster with an amazing ending!” — Peg K. We think she means this one.
“I would go back to the day of the Royals World Series parade. It was a beautiful sunny day, and I had a front row spot. I got to see all the players up close and take tons of pictures!” — Hannah B.
“Being a music lover [...] Count Basie at the Reno Club in the late 1930s, or BB King at the Cowtown Ballroom on Mar. 19, 1973.” — David C.
“Aug. 6, the day I moved to Kansas for college. If it weren’t for Aug. 6, I would not be able to call Kansas City my home. Not a date I would change for anything.” — Amanda M., KCtoday sales

Civic
- OK, last one. Because of the winter storm, KC is suspending trash, recycling, and bulky item pick-up for the rest of the week. Waste collectors will shift to snow operations. Pick-ups will be rescheduled + residents can put out four trash bags next week.
- KC hired its first homeless prevention coordinator, Josh Henges. Josh is expected to speed up assistance to the houseless population + implement ways to reduce generational poverty. He will work with the Mayor’s Houseless Task Force. 🏠
Biz

- The National Women’s Soccer League + the NWSL Players Association have agreed to their first Collective Bargaining Agreement through 2026. The plan raises a player’s minimum pay to $35,000 — reportedly more than the max pay when the league started in 2013. Players will also attain Free Agency after several years. ⚽
History
- If you have been looking to visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum — at 1616 E. 18th St. — now is your chance. The Royals are covering admission costs through February to honor Black History Month. Hours are Tues.-Sat. from 10a.m.-5 p.m. + Sundays from 12-5 p.m.
Edu
- Staffing shortages continue in KC schools, with districts only able to fill ~50% of absences (some even less). If you’re thinking about becoming a substitute teacher, here are step-by-step instructions for Missouri and Kansas. Applications take only a few days to process. Average substitutes in the metro make ~$130 per day. 🍎 (The Beacon)
Arts
- Wine, French food, and live jazz. What’s not to like? Ça Va — at 4149 Pennsylvania St., Kansas City — transforms into a jazz club every Thursday from 9-11 p.m. It’s the only venue in Westport with consistent live jazz, and it even features occasional local hip-hop artists like Kadesh Flow. 🍷 (Kansas City Magazine)
Answered
- Ooo, pretty lights. If you saw an unusual illumination on Monday night, don’t get your hopes up for UFOs. Sorry to burst your extraterrestrial bubble. The flare up was a result of the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch in Florida. The second stage separation happened over the Midwest. (FOX4)
