Hello Friday.
March 29 2024
If we haven’t made this abundantly clear, we love our Kansas City community. Seriously, we think Kansas Citians are the coolest, and because we think so highly of you, we want to hear your stories.
This will be you writing your stories soon. | GIF via GIPHY
✍️ How to submit a story
- Write a story about a topic you love or know a lot about. We want the full story when you submit, not the idea or the outline.
- Go here + fill out the form with your name, social media handles (if you have ‘em), and upload your text and photos. Please be sure you have permission to use the photos you send us. If you didn’t take them, let us know who to credit.
- Give us 5 days to get back to you — we’ll let you know if we decide to publish it, when it will go out, and if any edits need to be made.
✍️ Stories we want
- We’re looking for passion pieces. Maybe you’re a cyclist and you have ideas for how to make the metro a friendlier place for bikes. Maybe you have a booth at The City Market and want to share which veggies are in season and how to use them in a recipe. Or maybe your great-grandma passed down a story about Kansas City that needs to be told.
- Please include links in your story so readers can click out for more context. See our newsletter for examples on how this is done.
- We loooove photos + videos, and the more the better. Just please make sure we know who to credit.
- Keep your story to 500 words or less. This doesn’t mean we won’t publish longer stories. Just be conscious of your word count.
Send this to the Carrie Bradshaw of your friend group using our social share icons below.

Development
- An $11 million multifamily development at Berkley Riverfront could bring a solution to Kansas City’s affordable housing problems. Espero Kansas City — developed by the Vecino Group — will bring 63 apartments to an area southwest of Berkley Parkway + North Lydia Ave. 15 units are for residents identified as chronically homeless. (Kansas City Business Journal)
Coming Soon
- Standby for another WingStand by Jefferson’s. Lawrence-based Jefferson’s Franchise Systems is planning its second location in the Kansas City metro — at 7715 State Line Rd. The new location will open mid-October as a quick-service concept. This means limited indoor seating and smaller locations. (Kansas City Star)
Sports
- The Royals pulled out a 3-2 Labor Day win against the Baltimore Orioles. Ryan Mountcastle brought in a run with two outs in the 8th inning + Andrew Benintendi drove the team home with a run in the 9th. The 4-game series continues tonight at 6 p.m.
Community
- This new grocery store concept is providing free food + other necessities to metro area families. Cross Lines Community Outreach — located in KCK’s Armourdale neighborhood — allows families to “shop” for what they need through an assortment of fresh foods, household cleaners, and toiletries. 🛒 (FOX4)
Outdoors
- Invasive plants are a baaad problem to have. That’s why the City of Lenexa is using goats to tackle vegetation problems. The city contracted Goats on the Go to release a grazing herd to curb growth through a 2.5-acre stream corridor at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park. 🐐(KSHB)
Edu
- And all that jazz. UMKC is welcoming Carl Allen into the role of professor of jazz studies at the university. He comes from a 12-year tenure at the Juilliard School as the artistic director of jazz studies. 🎷 (KCUR)
List
- Pumpkin spice and everything nice. Fall is creepin’ up — whether that means cooler temps or the decór in our homes. Can’t wait for spooky season’s “acceptable” start date? You can look ahead at this guide of 31 fall-focused activities. Think: Oktoberfest, the World’s of Fun Halloween Haunt, and Faulkner’s Ranch. 🎃
Cause
- SC-based 501C3 nonprofit The Greenlaw Foundation is raising funds through individual + community donations to help support struggling veterans. Donations are tax deductible and can help change the lives of veterans in need. Ⓟ
Finance
- This no annual fee cash back credit card has a wildly easy $200 bonus offer after spending $500 in the first 3 months. (Read: That's like getting 40% cashback on your next $500 spent.) Bonus: 0% interest on purchases for 15 months. Ⓟ
Soakin' up the last bit of summer
Cheers to a short work week + a much-needed recharge. We asked you how you spent your Labor Day — hopefully free of labor. Reader @kellyhnspencer had lunch with her sister and took a long walk in the park with her husband, while reader @frostedkcbakery spent time relaxing at home with family before a busy baking season. ☀️
